For Healthy People (Qada)

Use this if you missed days due to travel, illness (temporary), or menstruation. You must fast these days back. Fidya is not an option for healthy people.

The Golden Rule

Money cannot replace Fasting unless you are permanently physically unable to fast (e.g., old age, terminal illness). If you are young/healthy but missed fasts due to laziness or temporary illness, you MUST make them up (Qada).

Which Category Are You?

Islamic law categorizes missed fasts into three distinct types. Identifying yours is key to clearing your debt.

1. Qada (Makeup)

This applies to 90% of people. If you missed a fast due to:

  • Menstruation / Post-natal bleeding
  • Temporary Illness (Flu, Fever)
  • Travel (Safar)
  • Pregnancy / Breastfeeding
  • Negligence (Laziness)

Ruling: You must fast 1 day for every 1 day missed. No money is owed.

2. Fidya (Compensation)

This is a financial payment aimed at those who have no hope of fasting.

  • Old age (too weak to fast)
  • Chronic Illness (Diabetes where fasting is dangerous)

Ruling: You do not fast. Instead, you feed one poor person for each day missed (approx £5/$10).

3. Kaffarah (Penalty)

This is a severe penalty aimed at major violations of the Ramadan sanctity.

  • Intentionally engaging in sexual intercourse during fasting hours.
  • (Some scholars include intentionally eating/drinking without excuse).

Ruling: You must fast 60 consecutive days for each violation. If proven physically unable, feed 60 poor people.

Making up Qada

You do not need to fast consecutively. You can spread them out (e.g., Mondays and Thursdays) throughout the year. It is highly recommended to finish them before the next Ramadan arrives.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women fall under "Temporary Illness". They are exempt from fasting if they fear harm, but the debt remains as Qada to be paid when health returns.

Schools of Thought (Madhabs)

Delaying Qada until next Ramadan

  • Hanafi No penalty. You only owe the Qada (makeup fasts), even if delayed for years.
  • Majority (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) If delayed without excuse, you owe Qada PLUS Fidya for each day delayed.

Intentional Eating/Drinking

  • Hanafi Requires Qada AND Kaffarah (60 days fasting).
  • Majority Requires Qada and sincere Tawbah (Repentance). Kaffarah is restricted only to sexual intercourse.

Frequently Asked Questions

? I missed fasts when I was young/stupid, can I just pay Fidya?

No. According to the consensus of Sunni scholars, fasts missed due to negligence or temporary reasons must be made up (Qada) by fasting. Fidya is only for those permanently physically unable to fast.

? What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

You are exempt from fasting if you fear harm to yourself or the baby. However, these fasts must be made up later (Qada) when you are able. Fidya does not replace the obligation to fast.

? I delayed making up my fasts until the next Ramadan arrived. What now?

You must still make them up. According to the Hanafi school, you only owe the Qada (fasting). According to the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, you owe Qada AND a Fidya payment for each day delayed without a valid excuse.

? Do I have to fast consecutive days for Qada?

No, for Qada (makeup) fasts, they do not need to be consecutive. You can fast them separately throughout the year. For Kaffarah (penalty), they MUST be 60 consecutive days.

? Can I combine intentions (e.g. 6 days of Shawwal + Qada)?

Scholars differ. The safer and preferred view (matches Shafi'i/Hanbali/Hanafi dominant view) is to keep them separate to fulfill both obligations fully. First finish your Qada (debt), then fast voluntary days.

? What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a severe penalty for intentionally breaking a fast (specifically through intercourse) during Ramadan days. The penalty is fasting 60 consecutive days. Eating/drinking intentionally usually requires Qada + Tawbah, though Hanafis apply Kaffarah to this too.

? How much is Fidya?

Fidya is the cost of two meals (or typically £5 / $10) per missed day. It is paid by those with chronic illnesses or old age who cannot fast.
