The Pillars of Nikah

For a marriage to be valid in Islam, specific conditions (Arkan) must be met. This document records them.

  • Ijab & Qubul: Offer and Acceptance between the Wali and the Groom.
  • The Mahr: A mandatory gift from Groom to Bride. It can be prompt (paid now) or deferred (paid later/upon death/divorce).
  • Witnesses: Two adult Muslim males must witness the contract.

Prophetic Advice

"The most blessed marriage is the one with the easiest provision (Mahr)."

— Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Is this legally binding in the UK?

No. A Nikah is a religious ceremony. To be legally married in the UK, you must also have a civil registry marriage. This document serves as a religious record and moral contract between parties.

What is a Wali?

The Wali is the bride's guardian (usually father). His consent is a mandatory condition for the validity of the Nikah generally.

Can the bride set conditions?

Yes. In the Hanbali school (and others), stipulations (Shurut) made in the contract—like 'no second wife' or 'right to work'—are binding. If violated, she has the right to annulment (Faskh).
